In mid-October 2025, Australia experienced unprecedented heat as multiple states shattered October temperature records. On 21 October, the outback town of Birdsville, Queensland, hit 46.1 °C, setting a new state October high. Meanwhile, in New South Wales, Bourke Airport recorded 44.8 °C, surpassing the previous NSW October record from 1919. 

Key Developments 

  • Many regions, including Queensland, South Australia and NSW, recorded October highs up to 16 °C above average.  
  • The weather bureau Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) forecast Sydney’s Central Business District could exceed its October record of 38.2 °C, with western suburbs possibly hitting 40 °C.  
  • High heat combined with dry and windy conditions has prompted extreme fire danger, with 32 bushfires and grassfires active in NSW alone.  
  •  This surge in extreme temperatures is linked to the ongoing climate crisis: Australia’s national annual average temperature is about 1.5 °C higher than in 1910

Polar Change link 

Australia’s southern and eastern regions lie in the mid-latitudes, where westerly winds and the jet streams shape the weather. In spring, the Antarctic polar vortex can weaken due to rapid polar warming, shifting these winds toward the equator and trapping high-pressure systems over eastern Australia. This leads to longer, hotter, and drier conditions, with more intense heatwaves and warmer nights. Warmer oceans and reduced rainfall amplify these extremes, putting communities, ecosystems, and already stressed wildlife at greater risk. 

Health and Socioeconomic Implications 

  • Heat stress threatens human health: increased risk of heat-related illness, dehydration, and strain on medical services. 
  • Infrastructure and energy systems face higher loads. 
  • Fire risk is elevated, threatening property, lives and biodiversity. 

Urgent Response Needed 

  • Scale up early warning systems and public-health alerts specific to extreme heat events. 
  • Invest in cooling infrastructure, resilient power grids and community safe-spaces for heatwaves. 
  • Prioritize protection of vulnerable groups (elderly, children, remote communities) and biodiversity under thermal stress. 
  • Accelerate emission reductions globally and invest in adaptation to safeguard at-risk regions from worsening heat threats.
