2023 wasn’t just hot, it smashed temperature records from June onwards, becoming the hottest year in 125,000 years [1]! 2024 seems to be taking the same fiery path. The Arctic, often dubbed the “ground zero” of climate change, is currently experiencing unprecedented warmth, suggesting another year of global heatwaves and rising concerns. On February 4, the air temperature in the Arctic averaged 1.74 °C above the 1981-2010 climate reference monitoring period. We promised ourselves to stay below 1.5 °C.

A warm Arctic means less sea ice, which acts as a reflective shield for our planet. With less ice, more heat gets absorbed, leading to rising sea levels and amplifying extreme weather events. These disruptions threaten global food security, alter disease patterns, and put coastal communities at risk.

This current heatwave might just be a “harbinger” of what’s to come. Satellite records show the Arctic sea ice currently stands at the ninth lowest level since monitoring began in 1979. It’s clear the Arctic is feverish, and its symptoms point towards a global climate crisis. Stay informed by visiting https://ai.globalclimaterisks.org where you will find daily updates on extreme weather and climate impacts. Share the information, engage in meaningful discussions, and explore ways to support organisations tackling climate change. Let’s turn up the heat on solutions, not the planet.
