In Practice

Climate pressures can affect both the comfort of individual trips and demand for particular destinations. In a 2024 Travel Courier interview, Intrepid’s Canadian leadership described extending departures into March and November in the southern United States, moving outdoor activities away from the hottest parts of the day and using higher-elevation Tuolumne Meadows during Yosemite’s summer heat.

Its August 2025 European expansion announcement introduced 32 trips across 15 countries, including additional options in northern Europe and new destinations such as the Faroe Islands. Intrepid also expanded departure dates as more customers chose to visit Greece, Spain, and Croatia outside the peak summer season.

The company identified changing climate conditions alongside overtourism and evolving preferences as drivers. Its response therefore operates at two levels: adapting existing experiences to local conditions and adjusting the wider range of trips as customer demand moves between seasons and places.

Why this example was selected

Travel Courier’s reporting provides direct operational examples from Intrepid’s leadership, while the subsequent product announcement shows how similar considerations influence commercial planning. This combination makes the relationship between climate conditions and customer experience and demand tangible. The case is useful because it includes specific changes to timings, routes, and destinations, rather than relying solely on a general commitment to more sustainable tourism.

Key Lesson

Use changing environmental conditions and customer preferences to review activity schedules, departure calendars, and destinations together. Build flexibility into the range of services so the business can respond as demand shifts.
